3ds Max vs. Blender: Revealing results of a CG software user survey

It’s clear from the pie chart that 3ds Max is the giant in the market here, with Maya (also an Autodesk product) the next big player. If you scroll down the article, what really stands out is that both of these packages consistently rank the lowest in user satisfaction.

I was surprised to see that Lightwave has such a small share. I’ve always had a soft spot for it, but perhaps in recent years the situation has changed. I stopped doing 3D work around the same time that Modo came out, and I was aware that many were switching loyalties then.

The Cinema and Houdini get big positives, but I’m especially pleased to see the open-source Blender rank so highly in most responses. I’m hoping to get back into CG graphics soon, and I’d love to invest my energies in free software.

Open source, open world

Focus has a great infographic about open source. And not just in software, but culture, business, government, hardware, education, science, medicine and other areas. This would be a great basis for a website.

I’m looking for a super-simple CMS. So far, I like @OneFileCMS

OneFileCMS is just that. It’s a flat, light, one file CMS (Content Management System) entirely contained in an easy-to-implement, highly customizable, database-less PHP script.

I played with the demo at opensourceCMS, and got the feeling that I could have a lot of fun building a small website using this, and even styling the CMS itself. Actually, as the author himself admits, its more of a text editor than a CMS - and a plain text editor, with no WYSIWYG editor or even syntax highlighting.
I’m absolutely going to give OneFileCMS a spin, but I’m still on the lookout for alternatives. In truth, what  want could stand to be a little more feature rich than this one.

Tommy, the author of OneFileCMS, has some other brilliant and/or amusing projects. It’s worth glancing at his blog: http://iamnotagoodartist.com/
Also, SEO worms may have use for another of his tools: http://whatpageofgoogleamion.com/

Lettercase: The League of Movable Type’s social font manager

Open source is a model that you can’t easily apply to creative endeavours, at least according to many type designers. The League of Movable Type has a blog post which sums up the problem nicely, and then offers a potential solution: Lettercase.
We want to change the perception of open source typography, and to do it, we’re doing some landscaping ourselves. […] We’re paying a lot of attention to Github, and in a broad sense, you can imagine Lettercase  being a similar tool. Private & public projects, either for something you don’t want to share or for something open source; collaborators, working together on shared projects; forking, or duplicating existing projects, that both pay respects to the original creator & allow you to mess with it & make something new. These are important ideas that helped propel the crazy success of open source software, and we don’t see any reason typography can’t benefit from the same.

It’s all in invite-only beta of course, but I applied immediately. My feeling is that creative work can benefit artists and designers just like it can programmers and tech businesses.
