Sometimes you just need a good, simple, flat pattern in Photoshop. A plain ol’ grid, ot something to give the design a bit of textural “oomph” but without the cheesiness of a full-on seamless photo. Presenting Flatterns, pixely patterns I made just for you.

You can load them in Photoshop by adding a Pattern Overlay style to a layer, then clicking the pattern button, then in the menu options (behind the little corner arrow in a circle) choosing Load Pattern.

I may add new patterns as I think of them; I’ll keep you posted. Hope you like ‘em and use ‘em!

Polishing a turd: The ‘new’ Google logo

Google have made some very minor modifications to their logo. Brand New sum it up perfectly:

…the new logo seems better because the old one was just so much worse, despite it being the exact same thing

At top is the previous logo, and in the middle is the version currently being rolled out. The one at the bottom is mine, and took about ten minutes using Photoshop layer styles. I think it could be further improved by lavishing another five minutes on lightening some of the blues and checking readability at different sizes. That aside, I think mine is already sharper, cleaner and generally better than any Google logo thus far. That’s not to say that I’m such a great designer or anything, but I thing Google still have a lot to learn about the value of good design.

How Comic Books Can Make You a Better Designer

If you’re not seeing how comic books could possibly relate to “real” design, consider this: A website is meant to convey a message, just as a comic book tells a story. While it’s not showing your audience frame by frame what happened in a fight between Wolverine and the Incredible Hulk, your design should be just as engaging.

Hotmail’s logo lineage

For such a well known brand, Microsoft have sure screwed around with Hotmail’s logo over the years. I’d have left it pretty much at the 1997 look, I think. (via The Next Web)
