Rocketship sketch (and my retirement from #Daily365)
Last weekend I bought a nice heavy weight sketch pad and some new technical drawing pens, and I’ve finally had some time to sketch something. I’m not thrilled with the wonky proportions and I rushed some of the details, but I’m generally happy with the result, considering I haven’t sat down to draw something like this in years!
This also seems like a pretty good time to mention my daily designs - or lack thereof! Yeah, I gave up after two weeks. The truth is, I wasn’t thrilled to post an unfinished idea (the
astro-penguin illustration I still have plans to finish) and it kind of killed my motivation. I could have attempted some simpler designs, but I really wasn’t interested in producing that kind of stuff.
As bad as I feel about quitting, I still plan to post things I’ve been working on fairly regularly, like this sketch. I’m still doing a
Thing a Week, and I regularly update
another photography blog.

Penguin on the Moon #Daily365
This is the most reluctant I have been to post one of my daily designs. There’s an amusing picture here, but I really wanted to pay more attention to the details, add stars and the Earth in the background, some more craters, fix some of the colours … the list goes on, but I simply don’t have any more time today.

Retro cassette icon freebie #Daily365
Today’s daily design is an icon of an old cassette tape. I’m making the actual SVG vector file available with this post in an attached ZIP file (I think Posterous does something sensible with those!). I consider it free to use for any non-profit reason.
It generally follows the principles of the
Tango icons, commonly used on Linux’s Gnome desktop, but I haven’t exactly paid close attention to their guidelines.

Password incorrect #Daily365
Conceptually this one is a bit weak, but this is a technique I’ve been wanting to try for a while. I wish I had put a bit more personality into the poses, especially the 6 who should at least be shaking his fist!
The robots already existed, but the rest of the composition and rendering took exactly an hour.

Living in a Box World #Daily365
Feeling rough, I called in sick today. On the plus side, I got to spend a bunch of time tweaking today’s daily design. I’m quite pleased with the stick-robots, so may use them again!

Bootleg Falcon - my #thingaweek and #Daily365 for Sunday
I’ve decided that doing a daily design and a Thing a Week is a bit much work for someone who doesn’t do design or photography for a living, so I am going to be counting one photograph every week as a daily design, starting with this one.
For anyone unfamiliar with Thing a Week, it’s a Flickr photography group very much in the spirit of the design-a-day challenge. It’s open to anyone, so please join us if it sounds like fun to you.
This week’s theme was ‘
Trivia’, and accordingly I will be including the following factoids with my entry:
George Lucas had a $150,000 contract for writing and directing Star Wars, but he cannily insisted on 40% of merchandising - something the studio agreed to because they had no idea of what a phenomenon the franchise would become. In just the first year 42 million small action figures were sold.
Lucas once said that the shape of the Millennium Falcon was inspired by a hamburger. This toy pictured however is a bootleg, and would not have profited the Star Wars empire at all. The ship behind is a Nostromo knockoff from Alien.

Dodgems #Daily365
Another uninspired day, so another in my series of ‘fontographs’.

Bath time #Daily365
Today’s daily design makes use of my earlier penguin cartoon, and adds another little guy who looks like he wanted a bath. I’ve tried to reference a little of the style of old-school animations, by making it look like the background was painted on a separate layer. Sadly, the direction of light is inconsistent on these two because I drew the smaller chap facing the other way and flipped him at a later stage, when I didn’t have the time or inclination to redraw the shadows.
I know: excuses, excuses.

Welsh Twitter dragon #Daily365
A bit of a cheat today - this design wasn’t created entirely this evening. In fact, it’s about three evening’s work (see other posts from last September).
Tonight, I changed the eyebrow so he looks less angry (I actually preferred that look, but had several negative criticisms), finalised the palette using a
nice scheme from Colour Lovers and added a bit of canvas texture in GIMP.
Of course, I’m not the only one doing these daily designs - check out ‘
Of Science and Beauty’ for some really nice science themed illustrations.

Adventures in Space and Time #Daily365
This was one of those designs where I had the basic concept nailed in ten minutes, and then spent ages refining it. I’m still not entirely satisfied, but happy enough to leave it here. That said, I may revisit this in another daily design and produce a magazine cover or something.

Mixed signals #Daily365
Another simple one today. The Dalek and ‘Rarr’ ones took over an hour each, so I imagine I’ll only have time to do more elaborate designs at the weekends.

Rarr! #Daily365
Not so happy with this one, but I guess that’s the deal with the daily design: learn, move on, do another one tomorrow.

Freedom #Daily365
Today’s daily design. Not much inspiration this evening, so I produced another image for my typographs series.

Dok-torr? My first daily design #Daily365
Smashing Magazine has an article encouraging designers to produce a something every day. This is my first effort. I was ‘inspired’ by the recent Doctor Who finale, and by Comicraft’s big font sale (which is still on as I write this, so act quick if you want some great fonts for only $20.10).
I expect I’ll be using my new fonts for later designs!
